ABSTRACT. Professor Huang Zhongjing, Head and Professor, Department of Education, of the Faculty of Education at East China Normal University (ECNU), invited me to give some lectures to MA and PhD students on the French philosopher Michael Foucault and to introduce the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein. This was no mean feat but I was surprised to learn that students at ECNU already had a fair understanding of Foucault (less so about Wittgenstein). pp. i–v
