ABSTRACT. We will briefly outline the history of the icon as artistic creation and analyze a series of contemporary icons designed by various Romanian artists, who are conspicuous for their attempts to give the Orthodox tradition a new look at style and art. Icon painting is rediscovered and enriched both technically and stylistically, thus seeking to reconcile the creative trends of the age with the traditions and canons specific to the great Orthodox patterns.
