ABSTRACT. Considerable research attention has focused on the culture of the folk, the liveliness of folklore in everyday life, the nature of the folklore text, and the distinction between folklore and popular culture. I seek to contribute to a wider understanding of contextual and cultural influences on the value of folklore as an aspect of cultural and national identity, the structure of oral narratives like folktales, the nature of folklore in society, the notion of folklore as a process, and the scope of folklore. pp. 266–271

Keywords: public folklore, society, cultural life, oral narrative
