ABSTRACT. Manovich holds that new media objects assure users that their choices are unique, rather than preprogrammed and shared with others. Thoman and Jolls observe that to be a functioning adult in a mediated society, one needs to be able to distinguish between different media forms and know how to ask basic questions about everything we watch, read, or hear. Hobbs defines media literacy as the process of accessing, critically analyzing media messages and creating messages using media tools. Castells remarks that the culture of the Internet is one made up of a technocratic belief in the progress of humans through technology.
