ABSTRACT. The literature on routines in management and organization studies has witness a tremendous growth in the course of the last 25 years. We review this literature by conducting a co-citation analysis of 743 documents published by scholars in academic journals. Our results indicate three distinctive, yet interrelated, schools of thought which have mainly been advanced in nine core journals: Organization Theory, Competence Theory and Practice Theory. We outline each of these schools and discuss how they address micro-foundations of organizational routines. The Practice Theory School has begun to meet some crucial points of this research agenda. We conclude that this stream would benefit from an engagement with complementary and synergistic research, which has hitherto been unconnected to routines. pp. 86–111
