ABSTRACT. The mainstay of the paper is formed by an analysis of Gide’s emphasis on movement and constant change, his wartime experience, and his theory that a mentor’s love can help cultivate his protégé’s finest qualities. My paper contributes to the literature by providing evidence on the nexus between the evolution of Gide’s wartime thought and writings, the coding strategies Gide employs to transmit his covert political messages, and the real-world implications of sexuality in Gide’s narratives. pp. 179–184

Keywords: Gide, wartime experience, authenticity, sexuality, political values
