Abstract. This article is structured as follows: I will start with a brief look at the French education system and France-specific approaches to defining entrepreneurship, followed by a historical overview of French HE entrepreneurship education activities. I will then position these developments against potential facilitators and barriers to entrepreneurship education and will focus in particular on the role of the French government, the French HE sector with its powerful Grandes Ecoles Management Schools and a finance sector not necessarily in favor of entrepreneurship and small business development. I will conclude with some recommendations for policy and practice. pp. 37–54
