ABSTRACT. This paper provides an introduction to three globalisms of education: the neoliberal story of increasing world economic integration; the postcolonial story of decolonization and cultural difference that includes the movement of self-determination based on the analysis of inherent unequal power relations that comprised colonialism and imperialism; and the technological story of openness, interconnectivity and convergence. The first two ‘globalisms’ are an antithesis and the third that affects both we consider to be what we call the ‘experiment of openness.’ Globalisms are metanarratives or the dominant and counter-ideologies as ideas and beliefs that shape the social world and its shared guiding norms and understandings – both what is and what ought to be. We provide a philosophical interpretation of the meanings of globalism as openness in terms of the long historical view of the emergence of global systems, and consider education as global studies. pp. 50–67
