ABSTRACT. Barnes claims that defense of judicial independence and academic freedom is crucial for restoration of democratic processes. Bentley et al. maintain that institutional autonomy could empower the institutional bureaucrat to such an extent that the freedom of individual academics could be imperilled. Haiven remarks that tenure is a process meant to protect academic freedom. (pp. 177–181)
