ABSTRACT. In the present paper, I focus on the underlying causes and consequences of participation in corruption, the occurrence and reporting of corruption, the struggles of new democracies to battle corruption, the causes and consequences of corruption, and the existence of corruption in Mexico. This paper seeks to fill a gap in the current literature by examining different aspects of patterns of corruption in Mexico, the limits of structural and institutional explanations of corruption, the impact of democratization on corruption, the resources needed to battle corruption, and Mexico’s pervasive culture of corruption. pp. 182–187
