ABSTRACT. The objective of this paper is to systematically review geolocation data mining and tracking, metaverse engagement metrics, and simulation modeling and visual imagery tools instrumental in immersive decentralized 3D digital worlds. The findings and analyses highlight that cloud computing and virtual immersive technologies, geospatial mapping and data visualization tools, and environment perception sensors are instrumental in extended reality environments. Throughout April 2022, a quantitative literature review of the Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest databases was performed, with search terms including “the blockchain-based metaverse” + “3D generative modeling and digital twin simulation tools,” “spatio-temporal fusion and context awareness algorithms,” and “immersive visual- ization and cyber-physical cognitive systems.” As research published in 2022 was inspected, only 144 articles satisfied the eligibility criteria, and 29 sources were selected. Data visualization tools: Dimensions (bibliometric mapping) and VOSviewer (layout algorithms). Reporting quality assessment tool: PRISMA. Methodological quality assessment tools include: AMSTAR, Dedoose, Distiller SR, and SRDR.

Keywords: 3D; generative modeling; digital twin; simulation; spatio-temporal fusion; context awareness; immersive visualization; cyber-physical cognitive system; blockchain; metaverse
