ABSTRACT. Despite the relevance of spatial computing and holographic telepresence technologies, photorealistic synthetic images and data, and deep learning-based predictive algorithms instrumental in augmented reality environments, only limited research has been conducted on this topic. In this article, previous research findings were cumulated indicating that interconnected virtual worlds necessitate immersive visualization and cognitive computing systems, dynamic routing and digital twin simulation technologies, and big data management and context recognition tools. The contribution to the literature is by showing that cognitive decision-making and image processing computational algorithms, 3D capture and immersive extended reality technologies, movement and behavior tracking tools assist 3D virtual immersive environments. Throughout May 2022, a quantitative literature review of the Web of Science, Scopus, and ProQuest databases was performed, with search terms including “the 3D cognitive digital twin metaverse” + “artificial intelligence-powered prediction and geospatial mapping tools,” “networked immersive virtual reality and multimodal sensing systems,” and “spatial computing and holographic telepresence technologies.” As research published in 2022 was inspected, only 156 articles satisfied the eligibility criteria, and 29 sources were selected. Data visualization tools: Dimensions (bibliometric mapping) and VOSviewer (layout algorithms). Reporting quality assessment tool: PRISMA. Methodological quality assessment tools include: AXIS, Dedoose, Distiller SR, and MMAT.

Keywords: artificial intelligence; prediction; geospatial mapping; immersive virtual reality; multimodal sensing system; spatial computing; holographic telepresence; 3D cognition; digital twin; metaverse
