The Gospel Printed at Neamț Monastery in 1821: A Masterpiece of Romanian Typographic Art
ELENA ARDELEAN, NICOLETA MELNICIUC-PUICĂABSTRACT. The study aims to offer a rigorous stylistic analysis of a Gospel dated in 1821, the first illustrated Gospel in Romania. This book, printed at the Neamț Monastery, one of the most important printing centers in Romania, is certainly a model of typographic art. The 1821 Gospel is a large format book that includes many engravings, some attributed to the famous engravers Ghervasie, Simion Ierei and Mihail Strilbitki. In addition to the richly ornamented border, the book has numerous illustrations, frontispieces, vignettes, initials, full-page engravings (representing the Holy Evangelists) and smaller engravings depicting biblical scenes.
