ABSTRACT. The themes standing out a mile in the paintings of Nicolae Tonitza (1886-1940): childhood, youth and old age, also flowers and wars, are referred, in three collage-clusters, to Shakespeare’s seven ages of man, metaphorically outlined in As You Like It. The emphasis falls on nature rather than nurture.
