ABSTRACT. Castells argues that the information technology revolution induced the emergence of informationalism as the material foundation of a new society. Manovich remarks that the World Wide Web encourages the creation of texts that consist entirely of pointers to other texts that are already on the web. Belsey and Chadwick maintain that the opportunities arise from the global need for information as human beings assess the chances of their own survival as a species. Marlow holds that what distinguishes weblogging from previous web media is the extent to which it is social.
